How To Stretch and Why You

Should Stay Flexible With Good Stretching Habits

How to Stretch

How to stretch should be a required course for every non-flexible individual out there. Even people with naturally flexible muscles can benefit from stretching exercises. Stretching isn’t a mystery; but how many people have a stretching routine? If you think about it, our bodies should be as flexible as possible.

Why should we learn how to stretch? Well stretching helps us physically and mentally. The physical is to understand. If you have flexible muscles you are able to move faster and safer. If you are flexible you don’t injure yourself as much as someone who is tight. You feel better when you are loose and at ease.

What about the mental side? The mental side is why people take up yoga and tai chi; uniting the mind and body through movement. When your mind and your body are united you are in, what athletes call, the zone; everything you want to happen, seems to happen naturally. Many of us can feel stress and tension as tight muscles. By doing muscle stretching exercises not only will you get flexible, loose muscles but you will help to relieve the physical and mental effects of stress. Yet another mind/body benefit of stretching.

There are many stretching techniques and exercises. Static stretching and dynamic stretching are common stretching techniques that serve different purposes. Static stretching increases flexibility in static positions, such as the splits. Dynamic stretching increases flexibility through movement through the range of motion. For instance, a martial artist often does leg swinging stretching exercises which can help them be able to kick above their head.

Everyone can benefit from muscle stretching and flexibility exercises. Stretching muscles improves flexibility, helps prevent injury, helps relieve stress, and connects the mind and body. Like any other form of physical or mental training it requires practice. Everyone should have a stretching exercise routine. Before you establish a routine determine your flexibility goals, and create your routine to help you reach those goals.  Whether you are stretching for static flexibility or dynamic flexibility it is important that you perform the proper stretching exercises and techniques to improve that form of flexibility. Being able to kick above your head does not mean that you can do the splits, or vise versa. They require different kinds of stretching and flexibility.

Even if your goals are not being able to do the splits or kick over your head you can benefit from stretching. A stretching routine to help relieve stress is just as beneficial and important.
