How Often Should A Stretching Workout Be Done?

For years, many health experts have been crowing about the health benefits of regular exercise and promoting stretching as a good low impact exercise for many people to start with. Many people would like to begin a regular stretching workout but are confused about how often this workout should be done and how long each workout session should last. The ultimate decision on how often a stretching workout should be completed will depend on the health of the person that is doing the stretching but there are some guidelines that can be followed to make sure that you are getting the best out of your workout.

There are two main types of stretching workout that can be done by a person on a regular basis; a workout for strength and a workout for flexibility. Workout routines can be created that encompass aspects of both of these types of workouts but many people prefer a workout routine that is either one or the other. Strength workouts are generally more intensive and combine long movements with holding times that are designed to work the muscles hard and strengthen them over time. A flexibility workout will generally have more fluid movements and constant motion in the routine so that all of the muscles are working together and stretching in many different directions.

The Frequency

Many experts recommend doing a stretching workout at least three times a week to get the best effects for the body. This allows the person to exercise intensely one day and spend the next day letting their body recuperate from the stress of the day before. After the person has started to feel comfortable with the stretching workout, the intensity should be increased and the amount of days per week that the workout is done can rise to four or five days per week.

Sometimes people create stretching workouts to help them prepare for another activity, such as sports, dancing, or other types of exercise. In these cases, the stretching workout should be done before every session in order to increase flexibility and reduce the risk of straining a muscle when doing the more intense actions. The frequency of the stretching workout will depend on the frequency of the sport that follows it.

The Amount Of Time Needed

The amount of time that should be dedicated to a stretching workout will depend on what type of workout you are trying to accomplish. If the stretching workout is being used purely for exercise, then a workout session of 30 minutes to 1 hour would be a good length of time to ensure that all of the muscles in the body are being stretched properly. If the person is using the workout as a precursor to more intense exercise, then a period of ten to fifteen minutes is enough to prepare the person for their other exercises.
