A Guide to Back Stretching

If you are trying to get into shape the one thing you should do is get a stretching and flexibility program.  This could be in the form of yoga or just basic stretching.  Your whole body needs to be stretched out after every work out you do.  One place that gets very little stretching is your back.  Let's take a look at why you should start stretching your back.

Back stretches are very important for your overall health, and help to not only relieve back pain but even prevent it from even happening to begin with. If you want to learn more about back stretching, whether you want to focus on upper or lower back stretching, the best thing you can do is learn about a few back stretches and how to perform them.

Of all the different back stretching exercises that you can perform, here are a few of the very best and which you will find most effective if you are one of the millions of people out there who are presently dealing with back pain.

Just remember that back stretches need to be specific to each area of the spine, and there is a stretch however that stretches the entire length of the spine and is ideal if your back is less specific.

Stretches

For one of the most effective back stretching exercises you want to have your feet planted firmly about 18” apart and then rotate your head and shoulders to the left as far as you can until you feel a slight bit of tension. Make sure that you do not push too far because if you do you can end up seriously injuring yourself. Hold this for a few seconds then slowly twist in the opposite direction and hold for a few more seconds.

Those few seconds that you hold are what is giving your brain repeated signals of the normal and maximum allowed for muscle tension.

Here is another of the best back stretching exercises that you can do. To complete it you need to start by standing or kneeling on the floor with your hands on your hips. Then you need to slowly arch the lower back and stick out your chest while slightly leaning backwards, and a comfortable stretch should be felt in the lower and mid back area. Hold this position for a count of about ten seconds.

These are just a couple of ideas of the various stretches that are effective for the back and which you will want to try out. If you want to have the best results of all, you may want to seek help from a personal trainer who will be able to show you stretches that are going to be best suited to you and your needs and not only that but ensure that you are performing them correctly.
